HISTORY: Betty Friedan and Dr. Pauli Murray, a member of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, attended The Third National Conference of Commissions on the Status of Women. The theme of this conference was 'Targets for Action' and many of the attendees wanted to pass a proposition stating that The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) make sex discrimination illegal immediately. Of course their voices weren't heard because they were women but this was only fuel on their fire. Instead of arguing about it the group of women decided to do something about it. They retreated back to Betty Friedan's hotel room where they discussed multiple strategies for overcoming sex discrimination. Betty Friedan wrote the acronym NOW down and The National Organization for Women was formed!
The Organization was a result of The Feminine Mystique. Betty Friedan was a big part of both & these led to changes in society.
